About the Retreat Experience

Is this a Buddhist retreat?

No. While Adhisthana is home to a Buddhist community, our retreat is entirely secular. We teach mindfulness and compassion practices accessible to people of all beliefs or none.

What's the atmosphere like?

Our retreats are warm, inclusive, and non-judgmental with a gentle structure balanced with flexibility. The environment is supportive rather than strict or rigid.

What about silence?

We practice "warm silence" during designated periods. This means:

  • No speaking, but smiles and eye contact are welcome
  • Silence is introduced gradually, starting with overnight silence
  • Teachers are always available if you need support during silent times

What is the food like?

All meals are healthy, nutritious, and vegan. We are able to cater for some dietary restrictions, however if you have multiple allergies or requirements, we may advise you to bring your preferred food along. Please detail any allergies or dietary requirements in your booking form.

What if I need to leave early?

While we ask participants to stay for the entire program, we understand if emergencies or health issues require early departure.

What if I've never been on a meditation retreat before?

You're welcome! All practices are guided and adaptable. You don't need to be an expert meditator, just have 6+ months of practice.

What if emotions come up during practice?

Our experienced teachers are there to support you. One-on-one sessions are available if you'd like to talk.

What is it like sharing a room with someone?

Most of us would probably prefer to have a room to ourselves, given the choice, however sharing a room with someone on retreat can be a fantastic way to connect and keep things affordable. You will only share with one other person, and in each room you will have your own private drawer (with lock and key) and a storage box under your bed.

Most of the day will be spent in the shine room or exploring the grounds. You are also welcome to use the communal lounges at any time for reading or reflection if you need some space and privacy. We recommend bringing an eye mask and ear plus so you can work to your own sleep schedule, regardless of who you are sharing with.

Etiquette

Retreat etiquette:
  • Arrive on time for sessions
  • Take care of your needs – rest if tired, adjust your position if uncomfortable
  • Be kind and respectful to others

Shared work/chores

Part of the retreat experience is practising generosity and working together to keep the space clean. Upon arrival, you will be invited to sign-up to a light task. You will do these often in small groups, and tasks will be things like peeling vegetables ahead of one mealtime or washing up after dinner.

We know that some people with challenging symptoms may be unable to engage in all tasks - we ask you to consider what you possibly could help with. There is no judgement, and we value anything you can contribute towards the team effort.

The full retreat group will also support with clean-up before departure, creating a warm welcome for the next retreat group to arrive.

Adhisthana etiquette:

Adhisthana is both a retreat centre and home to a resident community. Please honour these guidelines during your stay:

  • Keep noise to a minimum, especially early morning and evening
  • Follow guidance about appropriate use of the shrine room
  • Remove outdoor shoes when entering accommodation buildings
  • Stay on marked paths and respect the natural environment
  • Treat the ancient oak tree area with special care
  • Do not drink alcohol or take recreational drugs

Payment & Cancellation

Are payment plans available?

Yes, we offer interest-free monthly instalments. At least 50% must be paid before the retreat begins.

What if I need to cancel?

Cancellations up to 7 days before the retreat qualify for a refund (minus £100 admin fee) or transfer to another event. No refunds within 7 days of the start date.
